Quality of Life Training Program

Description

The CIHR Training Program in Rehabilitation Research is offered through a partnership between McMaster University and the University of British Columbia with sponsorship from the CIHR Institute of Musculoskeletal Health and Arthritis (2004-2010). Graduate students have a unique opportunity to expand their research training by participating in an integrated, interdisciplinary, online rehabilitation training program that is dedicated to outcome-based education, with a specific focus on quality of life.

The World Health Organization Quality of Life Group defined quality of life as "an individual's perception of their position in life in the context of the culture and value system in which they live and in relation to their goals, expectations, standards, and concerns" (Orley, 1994, p.99). Further, the primary goal of rehabilitation is the restoration of quality of life not merely restoration of the individual's ability to return to work (Sartorius, 1995). To enhance quality of life, rehabilitation focuses equally on addressing impairments and promoting healthy participation. This program will enable trainees to generate urgently needed evidence on rehabilitation, and ensure that research findings are translated into improved quality of life.
